LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band
The LAP-BAND® System was originally introduced in 1993. The band is placed laparoscopically around the upper part of the stomach, dividing the stomach into a small section above the band and larger section below the band. The smaller section limits the amount of food the patient can eat with the result of fullness after eating a small amount of food. The opening of the stomach can be increased or decreased by injecting or removing saline from the band and is a normal part of follow-up post the procedure. This procedures does not require the removal of any part of the stomach or intestine. The expected weight loss from this restrictive procedure is 60-70% of excess weight.
